North Devon - The Local Area and Attractions North Devon and Exmoor is a very special place, one of the most beautiful areas of the British Isles. With numerous designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a stunning coastline including miles of golden sands, pretty harbours, secret coves, dramatic cliffs and the wilderness that is Exmoor. Also we are lucky enough to have Britain’s first world class UNESCO Biosphere Reserve one of the finest unspoilt locations in the UK, this is centred around Braunton Burrows sand dune system in the same Parish as Little Comfort Farm!
Saunton, Croyde, Woolacombe, Putsborough ...... Beautiful Beaches and Hidden Coves There are miles of golden sand on the beaches of Saunton, Croyde, Woolacombe and Putsborough where you can enjoy swimming, surfing (there are a lot of lessons available locally which include board and wet suit hire), body boarding, kite surfing, building a sandcastle or dare you just lie in the sun read a good book and relax? Then there are the smaller coves of Lee Bay, Combe Martin and many more stretching along the coast to Lynton and Lynmouth where there are rock pools to explore, sea birds to watch and where the pace of life is slower and great family memories are made. Most of the beaches have been awarded Blue Flag or Seaside award status ensuring excellent facilities and water quality.
Exmoor, Lynton & Lynmouth, the North Devon Coastal Path ...... Lovely Landscape and Quiet Countryside Little Comfort enjoys an enviable location with our own wonderful valley filled with the sounds of… Well not very much really, just the trickle of the river and the animals and birds on the farm. Then there are the wonderful walks and vistas that Exmoor has to offer, including the simply beautiful Valley of the Rocks at Lynton, and the famous walks at Watersmeet. The coast path offers spectacular scenery around Baggy Point and Morte Point where there is ample opportunity for the hardy walkers or someone who prefers an afternoon’s stroll. Part of the coast path is along the Tarka trail, which offers 26 miles of off-road cycling along the banks of the Taw and Torridge estuaries a great day out for everybody no matter what your ability on a bike. Even Jackie can enjoy the Tarka trail, as there are no hills!! There are plenty of places to hire bikes along the way or if you would like to bring your own there is plenty of space in the barn at the farm to store them. Another great day out is a trip to Lundy Island which is a couple of hours boat ride away and is a great place to see seals and sea birds; it is a marine nature reserve. As well as all of this there are, of course, lots of pretty villages to explore and the patchwork of fields so typical of the West Country to enjoy.
Arlington Court, Marwood Hill Gardens, RHS Rosemoor ............. Historic Houses and Glorious Gardens. There is plenty to see and do if you enjoy visiting historic buildings and villages. With the National Trust house at Arlington, Chambercombe Manor, Tapley Park, Clovelly and Hartland Abbey all to visit. There is also the three masted schooner moored in Bideford and a visit to Torrington 1646 to enjoy. We are also lucky enough to have the Royal Horticultural Society garden Rosemoor, Marwood Hill, Hartland Abbey and Docton Mill nearby, as well as many other interesting gardens which may only be open for certain times of the year. Broomhill Sculpture garden is filled with amazing works of art and the food is delicious as well!
The Big Sheep, The Milky Way, Exmoor Zoo, Championship Golf Courses, Cycling, Surfing ........ Activities for all Ages For families and children there are a number of attractions to enjoy - all within 30 minutes of the farm. They include: Exmoor Zoo, Watermouth Castle, Wildlife and Dinosaur Park, The Big Sheep, Ilfracombe Aquarium. There are several more and we are happy to help you choose the best one to suit your family and have leaflets at the farm to help you make your choice. There are also 5 Golf courses locally including the links courses at Westward Ho! and Saunton. Horse riding on the beaches and Exmoor, the steam trains at Lynton and Minehead (this is a little bit further than 30 mins). Boat trips along the coast to look at wildlife or to go fishing or of course out to Lundy.
We do hope the above ideas are all helpful to you, there is much more detail on the http://www.northdevon.com website if you would like to do a bit more research before you arrive.
