At Little Comfort we try to minimise our adverse impact on the environment in whatever small ways we can. To this end we have decided to manage the farm using an organic system. This is the traditional method of farming using crop rotation, and managements systems avoiding the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides as well as minimising the use of veterinary medicines. We are happy to explain this in greater detail on the farm walks, each morning at 9am except for Fridays and Sundays. In the cottages we only use cleaning products that have a low environmental impact. The bin liners are biodegradable and the Loo paper, kitchen roll and tissues are either organic or made from recycled paper. Even the tin foil is recycled. We have tried to minimise the waste created at the farm, so we re use all bottles of washing up liquid and loo cleaner. We recycle glass bottles, tins, drinks cans, newspaper, cardboard, plastic bottles and tinfoil. There is also a compost bin for all the vegetable waste (only uncooked vegetable waste please). In order that we can reduce the use of electricity we have insulated the cottage lofts and provided you with a wood-burning stove, all the logs are grown on Little Comfort. All light bulbs are replaced with low energy light bulbs. As windows need replacing they will all be double-glazed. It would be a great help if you could help us by turning off lights, heating and immersion heaters when you are not in the cottages and remember to turn off the stand by light on the televisions as well, they use 80% of the power of the television when it is switched on!!!! We have been supported with our work on environmental awareness by the Green Tourism Business Scheme GTBS www.greentourism.org.uk/GTBSFacts.html, which has given us a structure to help us reduce our adverse impact on the environment. We are very pleased to say that we have achieved a gold standard in this scheme for 2007. Environmental Awareness | Give The Car A Holiday | Environmental Policy |
