Coarse Fishing Lake
The lake has been established for over thirty years and is situated
in a quiet and beautiful location, tucked out of the way so that it is only fished by a few locals and visitors who seek it out. Extending to well over an acre the lake has well-developed marginal growth as well as an island at the northern end and two strong areas of lilies providing abundant plant growth to give both food and cover for the fish.

There are good numbers of Carp with a substantial number of doubles to 17lb, as well as Bream (to 3lb), Roach (to 2lb) and Rudd  - all of which are noted for their lovely condition; the mixture of species suiting a wide range of anglers from the experienced carp man, family groups to youngsters having their first lesson.
The water is shallowest close to the island at about two feet, shelving to the outlet end where it is four foot six deep; on the far side of the island there is a large pool of much deeper water going up to seven feet giving a great variety of fishing from the choice of fifteen pegs round the lake.

The margins always remain the most popular, providing cover and cooler water particularly in summer when the fish can be seen swimming close to the surface. The deeper areas hold plenty of fish; the best Bream often being found in the deeper pool by the island. It is important to plumb the depth of your swim before you start to fish, as the bottom is quite variable. Apart from the obvious areas close to the Lilies and Bulrushes there are no snags to be concerned about so most anglers are happy with fairly lightweight tackle using 4lb line and size 12 to 16 hooks although those looking for the bigger carp may want to increase to a heavier line, but there is plenty of space to allow the fish to run (avoiding the margins!) before playing them into the net.

Float, Ledger and Poles are all popular depending on the time of year and the species fished for. Most anglers here find that the always reliable sweet corn or luncheon meat work well, either on their own or with maggots. For the Bream, Roach and Rudd, maggots on their own are as reliable as anything and are ideal for novices to learn the skills of coarse fishing. In the summer it is often worth trying floating bread or biscuits to tempt the carp to come up and whilst there is no restriction on use of baits, limited use of ground bait, trout pellets or coarse fish pellets is most productive.

The lake is open from dawn til dusk, March until December.

All anglers should start their fishing- day on arrival, ticket monies will be collected on the bank. There is a WC on site.

How to get to Little Comfort Farm:
From junction 27 of the M5 take the North Devon Link Road (A361) to Barnstaple. Leave Barnstaple on the A361 to Braunton. Pass through Braunton still on the A361 ( towards Ilfracombe). Pass through the village of Knowle. After 2/3 mile turn right towards Halsinger at Heddon Mills Cross, please take great care at this junction as it is an accident black spot. Proceed 1.8 miles turning left at the second crossroads. Then left again after a very short distance. Continue for 1 mile down a winding lane, over a small bridge and take the second right into Little Comfort Farm signed Fishing Car Park. Make your way over the lawns to cross the bridge to the lake

Alternative route to avoid Barnstaple where delays are usual during the summer and on Fridays.
From junction 27 of the M5 proceed to South Molton along the A361. Here turn right at the roundabout (by the Little Chef) towards Brayford and Blackmoor Gate (A399). Continue through Brayford and past Blackmoor Gate. Three miles after Blackmoor gate turn left onto the A3123 towards Mullacott Cross and Woolacombe. Turn left at T junction just before Berry Down Cross and take care to avoid turning to East Down where the main road turns a very sharp corner. Go straight over at Lynton Cross (by On-a-Hill garage) then turn left to West Down village. In the centre of West Down turn right towards the school (signed Barnstaple) and left just before the school to leave the village on a country lane. Take the second turning on the left (signed Little Comfort farm Fishing) and proceed down the hill along a narrow lane to Little Comfort on the left at the bottom of the hill just before the bridge, parking is signed Fishing Car Park. Make your way over the lawns to cross the bridge to the lake.
